Green Card
When driving abroad it is vital to have the correct documents for your car, one of which is an insurance document: the Green Card (which is now white!). In Greece, you cannot travel without insurance for your vehicle, because the law does not allow it and the country you will visit will not let you cross the border. Below are 3 facts that you should know when driving abroad:
Fact 1: You do not need to meet certain criteria to obtain a Green Card.
The only condition is to have your vehicle insured.
The issuing process is very simple and can be done in 2 ways:
A) From your insurance company at no extra cost.
B) From the counter at the country’s border (at an approximate cost of €10).
It’s best to call your insurance advisor and ask for a green card. It is provided free of charge. One important step to remember is that you will need to declare all possible drivers who will use the car abroad (e.g. your boyfriend, your spouse, your child).
You will then need to have your insurance policy, the Green Card, your ID and your driver’s license with you.
Fact 2: The green card does not extend the insurance policy you have abroad.
The green card is NOT an extension of the car insurance policy you currently have. It guarantees third-party liability coverage and compliance with international insurance requirements. In other words, it certifies that you are insured in your country, you meet the criteria for insurance and it extends the most basic of all coverages, 3rd Party Liability.
The only coverage that you can request as an extra is the roadside assistance.
Fact 3: If you travel within the E.U. you do need a green card.
A green card is not like your ID. The countries in which the green card is accepted are the countries that participate in the Green Card System and there are 47 in total.

It is also important to remember that the validity of the green card is the same as that of your insurance plan. When your car insurance policy expires, so does your green card.
Before you travel, check that:
A) The information on the green card is correct.
B) The green card does not expire before you return.
C) You are not passing through any country that does not participate in the Green Card System.
