I claimed on my Greek house insurane policy - here's what you need to know
A story by Olle Meurling, written by Stavros Tsichlis (Ιnsurance Αdvisor at Insurance-Greece)
Take immediate Action!
This is the most crucial decision to make! Remember that you are signing up for a potential claim that can reach many thousands of Euros in order to re-built your house.
The first action you should take is to inform the police as their report is requisite for the claim to go through. This is very important and it must be done as soon as you realise that your house is broken into!
The police will ask you for details as to what happened and if there are items missing. This is where you need to be extra cautious: If you didn’t have time to search your house and make a list of the things stolen, do not report anything and state that you will go the next day to submit your report. Insurance companies will base their compensation according to what you have declared in that list – this is why it is particularly important to get it right the first time!
Damages to your building
Holiday houses and time away from home
Items of high value
Parking spots, pergolas, storage sheds and pools
Do not assume that the above will be automatically added to your cover if you sign up to a house insurance agreement. It is a good idea to mention anything that is OUTSIDE of your property to the insurer and make sure that they mention it specifically in your plan. This also means that trees as well as fences are excluded from the policy as are items outside (e.g. bikes).
